The program this year will be brought to you virtually in consideration of the current rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

The Penang Dialogue is the Chamber's signature program that brings together AMCHAM members with key stakeholders from industry, local government, and academia to discuss core themes related to doing business in Malaysia, emphasizing Malaysia's role in the global value chain.

AMCHAM is delighted to announce that both Y.A.B. Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, the Chief Minister of Penang, and H.E. Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir, U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia will be joining us again this year to deliver a keynote address and to engage with the industry.

In the past 30 years, Malaysia has successfully curtailed high poverty rates and reduced income inequalities but has fallen short of the Vision 2020 goal to attain high income status while ensuring that prosperity is shared. The COVID-19 pandemic and leadership changes has had a major economic impact on Malaysia’s economy and its potential. Previously the country played a seemingly small but significant part of Global Value Chains, disruptions and risk mitigation pose an uncertain future as it charts its recovery. What does Malaysia need to do to retain its integral role?

This panel answers: How has significant world-changing-events changed business perspectives and managed risk? What lessons have been learnt from this, as we still navigate through this storm? Is Malaysia on course to move forward or are we falling behind?

Malaysia’s SME ecosystem is a mixed bag of companies that are technically capable, many meeting global standards, and others that are equally important but have yet to evolve into Industry 3.0 or 4.0. In today’s hyper vigilant age and with supply chains resilience more in focus, can Malaysia’s local ecosystem showcase its strength and resilience working in tandem with MNCs?

This panel looks into how MNCs are evolving their supply chains, making them more resilient to disruptions, and how this affects the local ecosystems that are reliant on them.

Dato’ Shidah Ahmad is the vice president & general manager of Keysight’s Global Order Fulfillment & Supply Chain. She has full accountabilities for the company’s worldwide Supply Chain, Manufacturing and Global Trade & Logistics operations. In this role, Dato’ Shidah leads a global team of close to 3000 employees, accountable for the annual shipments of approximately US$4.3B for the company.

In Supply Chain, Dato’ Shidah has oversight for all the activities from Order Management, Planning and Procurement, to Supplier & Contract Manufacturer Management for the company. The worldwide manufacturing operations under Dato’ Shidah’s purview cover the sophisticated Integrated Circuit (IC) Fabs, Optical & Digital technology Centers in the US & Europe (California, Colorado Springs & Beoblingen in Germany) and assembly & test facilities across the world (Malaysia/Japan/China/US/Spain). Dato’ Shidah is accountable for the Engineering functions involved in product redesign, design for supply chain & manufacturability and quality assurance. In addition, she is responsible for Keysight’s worldwide trade compliance and the regional distribution & logistics centers globally in Malaysia, Japan, Netherlands & US.

Siobhan Das was promoted in January 2020 as the first Chief Executive Officer of the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM). Serving initially as the Chamber’s Executive Director from January 2016, Siobhan has not only taken the Chamber to greater heights but she has strengthened the Chamber's presence with critical stakeholders, driving stronger engagement with its members and developing a powerful voice for its various business communities.

Siobhan assumed this newly created position at a very critical time for the Chamber leading it and its members through the global crisis of COVID-19. Insisting on a collaborative platform between the government and business stakeholders, under her guidance, the Chamber played a pivotal role in supporting businesses most impacted by the Malaysian government’s response. Siobhan positioned the Chamber so that it can support and effect policy changes that benefit not only AMCHAM Members, but other companies many of which support the U.S. business footprint in Malaysia.

Bret Funke is the General Manager of HP Malaysia Manufacturing and has held this position since October 2018. As part of HP Inc’s InkJet Supplies Organization, HPMM produces the bulk of consumer inkjet supplies for the company – hundreds of millions of units per year to meet HP’s global demand. In this role, Bret is responsible for the leadership of HPMM business operations and is the site leader at HP’s facility in Batu Kawan, Penang. He is also responsible for leading our manufacturing operations and strategy with external manufacturing partners in Malaysia and China. Bret joined HP in June 1996 as an engineer and has held a variety of R&D, Customer Assurance and Quality roles within HP’s LaserJet Systems and Office Printing Systems businesses. Prior to his current role in Penang, Bret was the Director of Quality and Customer Assurance for HP’s Office Printing Systems business and was based in Seoul, South Korea to participate in the integration of the Samsung Print business into HP after the acquisition of that unit in November of 2017.

More than 25 years of successful working experience providing strategic and operations leadership in challenging OSAT and EMS situations Dynamic and result-oriented leader with a strong track record of performance in highpaced electronics manufacturing services. Emphasising “team” approach to drive
business and operational improvements and implementation of best practices. Strong interpersonal skills, capable of handling sales, human resources, financial, operational matters and steering staff to peak performance.

Accountable for more than 5500 employees and 9 manufacturing sites across three countries (Malaysia, China and Philippines). Providing strategic, tactical and operational leadership to improve operating results.

Soon Kuek of Lam Research Corporation is General Manager for Lam Manufacturing Malaysia, the company’s latest and largest advanced technology production facility at the Batu Kawan Industrial Park in Penang.

Lam Research is a global supplier of innovative wafer fabrication equipment to the semiconductor industry. Sized at 700,000 square feet, Lam Manufacturing Malaysia is expected to be ready by mid-2021. The facility will manufacture key products for all of Lam’s customers across the globe.

Born and raised in Penang, Soon Kuek is excited to head the new factory in Penang after living and working in the USA for more than 20 years. Prior to this role, she was senior director of supply chain management, as well as senior supplier business manager and engineering manager at Lam Research in California, USA. Before joining Lam, Kuek spent 11 years at Xerox Corporation, where she held several roles.

Suresh Kumar is vice president in the Design Engineering Group and general manager of chipset silicon design in Malaysia at Intel Corporation. His current focus is managing hardware design for the development of next-generation client and server chipsets and system-on-chip (SoC) products.

Suresh also serves as general manager of the Intel Malaysia Design Center, a large engineering organization responsible for providing products to multiple Intel engineering groups and business units. He has spent more than 20 years at the design and development center, starting his career there in 1996, and has managed the center since 2018.

Besides overseeing the center and the engineering teams working there, Suresh works extensively with the external ecosystem, including universities, various government bodies and the industry.

Solomon Lorthu is the Managing Director of Penang Operations for Motorola Solutions Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. He was appointed to his current position on 1st January, 2018 and has assumed overall responsibility for the company’s operations at its Penang site that includes Supply Chain, R&D and Global Solutions & Services Center. Solomon continues to lead the R&D organization in Malaysia, the largest R&D setup for Motorola Solutions globally. Solomon has over 21 years of experience with Motorola Solutions and has held various key leadership positions within the company during his tenure.

Prior to his current appointment, Solomon was responsible for leading the Devices Hardware Engineering function within the Penang Design Center. Under his stewardship, Solomon has led various teams to deliver numerous innovative products under different portfolios for worldwide customers, from platform-based to fast derivatives. These products have won numerous design excellence awards internationally.

Solomon is passionate about people development, operational excellence and innovation. He continues to lead multiple initiatives surrounding these areas. He was also the recipient of Motorola Solutions Leadership Excellence Award in 2013 for his exemplary management and leadership contributions to his organization.

Cash McCracken is Director of Global Government Affairs for Seagate Technology. Based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he advises Seagate’s senior leadership on worldwide public policy and geopolitical issues, and leads Seagate’s government affairs function to advance Seagate’s public policy goals and identify strategic opportunities for collaboration and dialogue with governments and other relevant stakeholders around the world.

Prior to joining Seagate, Cash served as a diplomat in the United States Foreign Service at the U.S. Department of State. His assignments included serving as Economic Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Singapore, Digital Economy Officer at the U.S. Mission to ASEAN based in Jakarta, and additional tours serving in Vietnam, Sudan, Somalia, and Washington D.C.

Dave Mitchell is Vice President and General Manager of Manufacturing and Distribution for Boston Scientific’s Penang Operations. In this role, he is responsible for all aspects of the manufacturing facility in Penang.

Dave joined Boston Scientific in 2002, and has held various international roles within Boston Scientific Operations, including assignments in the United States, Ireland, and Costa Rica. He has been responsible for IT/factory automation, product technology transfers, plant scale-up, program management, and global operations strategy.

Prior to joining Boston Scientific, Dave worked for the Ford Motor Company, where he spent 7 years in manufacturing, powertrain design, and vehicle strategy. Dave also worked at Accenture doing strategy consulting in the consumer products industry.

Prof. Dato’ Dr. Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah is a Professor in Transport Studies at the School of Civil Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Since March 2017, he has been appointed as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) of USM. Preceding his term as Deputy Vice Chancellor, he was both the Dean of the School of Civil Engineering and the Director of the USM’s Engineering campus. He is widely regarded as a leading expert in transport matters in Malaysia.

He was the founding member of the Commission Member of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), and was made the Interim Chairman from 2017 until the day SPAD was decommissioned by the present government. As a commission member, he has helped to steer the organisation and the public transport strategies of the country He was appointed as the Director General of the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) between 2008 and 2011, and was critical behind many road safety strategies of the country. He is still very active championing road safety in Malaysia. In 2016, Ministry of Transport (MOT) Malaysia appointed him as the Cluster Head for the National Blue Ocean Strategy (NBOS) for MOT on road safety. For his work in road safety, he was accorded the Road Safety Icon Award by the Road Transport Department Malaysia (JPJ) in 2015. He has been advising the Penang State government and was instrumental behind the Penang Road Safety Strategies 2014-2020, the only state in Malaysia with such initiative. He continues to be the champion of road safety, and has been advocating for a new approach for road safety in order to produce the desired results.

John Neuffer is President and CEO of the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) where he’s responsible for setting and leading the association’s public policy agenda and serving as the primary advocate for maintaining U.S. leadership in semiconductor design, manufacturing, and research.

Prior to joining SIA, John served as Senior Vice President for Global Policy at the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), where he led ITI’s global team to expand market access opportunities for ITI member companies around the world. He directed all ITI’s global government relations in trade, cybersecurity, standards, regulatory, Internet governance, and privacy. John built strong relationships with foreign governments and industry associations in key global capitals, and advanced the high-tech industry’s trade agenda in Washington.

Before joining ITI, John served for over seven years at the Office of United States Trade Representative (USTR) in Washington, DC: two years as Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Affairs, preceded by over five years as Deputy Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Japan.

Prior to his tenure with USTR, John was a Senior Research Fellow and Political Analyst with the Mitsui Kaijyo Research Institute in Tokyo for nine years. As a leading commentator on Japanese politics and policy at the institute, he published a widely read newsletter and wrote regular commentary for the Asian Wall Street Journal, TheStreet.com and Newsweek Japan. All told, John lived in Japan 11 years. He is a native of Montana and Washington State.

27 years in Bosch I experienced first-hand how the Bosch Production System (BPS) now coupled with Industry 4.0 applied in their 283 plants worldwide–is transforming & propelling the Company to be sustainably successful & profitable. The Real life best practices of BPS are the training content that I share with & inspire the industry. Bosch was appointed a Digital Transformation Lab by MDEC in April 2018, from then on I was actively visiting SMEs to raise awareness of I4.0–and to date, I have visited some 160+ SME manufacturers–which helped form my deep understanding & solutioning of their needs & concerns especially in reducing foreign labour & increasing productivity, now made very urgent due to Covid-19.

I had invaluable opportunities & honour to speak & panel in many conferences, and trained many Masterclasses & workshops; some 80+ events on I4.0 over the last 3 years.

With Bosch, I take on a personal task to help drive I4.0 for Malaysia in conjunction with MPC, SIRIM, Koridor, Ministries, associates, federations, the Higher learning & TVETs.

Dato’ Ng Wan Peng is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). A government-owned agency, responsible to lead Malaysia's ICT and digital economy, tasked to establish and reinforce Malaysia's role as a regional technology powerhouse and become the Heart of Digital ASEAN.

Dato’ Ng Wan Peng is no stranger to the Malaysian ICT sector. With more than 25 years of industry experience, she is responsible for the strategic execution of MDEC’s key initiatives, all of which focus on accelerating Malaysia's digital economy growth. This includes extensively working on various programmes that drive digital sector investment, cultivate critical enablers of the digital economy, and ensure all Malaysians have access to learn and improve their digital skills.

In 2015, Dato’ Ng Wan Peng was conferred Darjah Setia Pangkuan Negeri (D.S.P.N) by the Head of Penang State in recognition of her outstanding leadership, dedication and continuous contributions to drive and expand digital economy’s footprint in Malaysia and globally.
