Given the current heightened health situation regarding COVID-19, and in line with what the Malaysian Government has just announced at 10 pm, 16 March 2020, this email is being sent to inform you that our program Malaysia In Flux on Tuesday, 17 March at 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm here at AMCHAM is CANCELLED.

Malaysia is facing yet another turn in its young history. What will this mean for the people and businesses in the country and the vision of a shared prosperity.

Against the background of an already tumultuous time with COVID-19 and the stresses on the global supply chains, AMCHAM is proud to present a diverse group of experts who will share their insights on this unexpected change. They will take a look at the current political climate and its impact and implications for the business environment along with the risks and opportunities will Malaysia and Malaysians will face in the months to come.

Political Scientist

Bridget Welsh is currently an Honorary Research Associate with the University of Nottingham Asia Research Institute Malaysia (UoNARI-M) based in Kuala Lumpur. She is also a Senior Research Associate of the Hu Feng Center for East Asia Democratic Studies of National Taiwan University, a Senior Associate Fellow of The Habibie Center, a University Fellow of Charles Darwin University. She specializes in Southeast Asian politics, with a focus on Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, and Indonesia.

An author and editor of numerous books and articles, her last book was entitled The End of UMNO?: Essays on Malaysia’s Former Dominant Party. Her forthcoming book A Divided Malaysia: The Rise and Fall of Pakatan Harapan examines Malaysia’s 2018 elections and the transformation of national politics during the Harapan government of 2018-2020.

She has taught at John Cabot University, Ipek University, Singapore Management University, SAIS (JHU) and Hofstra University. She received her Ph.D. in political science from Columbia University, language training at Cornell University (FALCON) and B.A. from Colgate University. She is a Senior Advisor for Freedom House, a member of the International Research Council of the National Endowment for Democracy and a core member of the Asian Barometer Survey covering fifteen countries in East Asia.

Badrul Hisham Ismail is one of IMAN Research's founders. Badrul's forte is urban studies, and he is passionate about how cities can be resilient utilizing the talents of its own people, and local resources. As the Director of Programmes at IMAN Research, Badrul helmed, organized and conceptualized research and programs on countering violent extremism (CVE).

In 2018, he was nominated as ZICO's ASEAN 40 Under 40 Youths, shaping the new dynamics of the region. His professional experience includes project-based works, including election observation where he monitored elections in Malaysia and other post-conflict countries in Asia, under the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL). Others include visual urbanism arts projects in New York City, such as Layered SPURA and Urban Reviewer. Badrul has also conducted research on alternative narratives in international relations theory with The Silk Road Research Institute. A Liberal Arts graduate from The New School in New York City and a MSc graduate on Urban Science, Policy and Planning from Singapore University of Technology and Design, Badrul is also a filmmaker, with works including The Tailor of Pertama, Dialog Dengan Dendi and Kisah Pelayaran ke Terengganu, as well as co-founder and content editor of Svara, a local Malay language journal that focuses on arts, culture and contemporary issues.
