Global value chains have taken a hit recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From the closing down economic activity across the regions as well as throughout the world to the disruptions in supply chains within national borders. The World Bank's Global Economic Prospects baseline forecast envisions a 5.2 percent contraction in global GDP in 2020 - the deepest global recession in decades.


Join us as we discuss these disruptions in the supply chains, both locally and regionally, and take a look at what's in store ahead if we are to successfully navigate these current disruptions.


Mr. T.H. Lim, Managing Director UPS Malaysia and Singapore will be giving his overview of the supply chain globally and in Malaysia, the challenges business face today; around cash flows, shift to e-commerce, labor and inventory shortage, as well as, how to pivot the business model to optimize the supply chain.


The following presentation will be conducted by Dr. Shardul Phadnis, Associate Professor and Director of Research at Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI). Dr. Shardul will be sharing the latest findings from two MISI studies (conducted between April 2020 and now) that examine current impact and response to the pandemic by different companies and the future outlook on supply chain disruptions.

    Tze Hsien (T.H) Lim

    Managing Director of UPS (M) Sdn Bhd

    As the Managing Director of UPS Singapore and Malaysia, T.H. is responsible for driving growth of the company’s small package operations in both markets. In his role, he oversees strategic business units that include Operations, Marketing, Business Development and Finance & Accounting. Currently based in Singapore, T.H.’s 28-year career with the organization has seen him assume a wide-range of leadership roles that have lent him both the breadth and depth required to fulfil his dual-country management responsibilities.

    During his term as Vice President of Strategic Planning and Development for the Asia Pacific Region, T.H. spearheaded several projects including the relocation of the UPS Asia Pacific Air Hub from Clark, Philippines to Shenzhen, China in 2010. The project expanded and strengthened UPS’s capabilities to serve a burgeoning region with new service levels, transit time improvements and increased package sorting volume capacity. He was also instrumental in advancing UPS’s worldwide service, as a member of the team charged with transitioning the Vietnam business from a joint-operations model to a wholly-owned one in 2013.

    An advocate for inclusive growth, he spoken extensively on the advantages of internationalization and exports for SMEs at industry events and capacity-building workshops jointly organized by UPS. A Malaysian native, T.H. holds a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management from Oklahoma State University, and is fluent in English, Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin and Cantonese.

    Dr. Shardul Phadnis

    Director of Research at Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation

    Dr. Shardul Phadnis is an Associate Professor and Director of Research at Malaysia Institute for Supply Chain Innovation (MISI), and leads MISI’s Center for e-Commerce And Retail Transformation. Shardul’s research examines how organizations create value in their supply chains using innovative business models, how executives’ mindset affects such innovation, and how organizations can adapt when their supply chains experience external shocks (such as regulatory disruptions, information revolutions like internet-of-things). His research has been applied by government agencies (U.S. Federal Highway Administration) and companies such as 7-Eleven, AB InBev, BASF, Cardinal Health, etc. for making strategic decisions in supply chains. Shardul worked in manufacturing firms and led Lean Promotion Office at a design-to-manufacture firm before earning his PhD (Engineering Systems) at MIT.
