What policies encourage innovation, entrepreneurship and create the right environment for Malaysia's e-commerce sector to flourish and grow?


AMCHAM invites you to its third program in our Digital Transformation Series: Building Malaysia's E-Commerce Sector on Thursday, 30 May from 9.30am to 11.00am (registration starts from 9.15am) at the AMCHAM Executive Office that will focus on the policy framework supporting the growth of the e-commerce sector in Malaysia.


The morning will bring together policymakers from various ministries and government-linked agencies to share updates with the AMCHAM community on their latest initiatives and regulatory measures to lay the foundations for a robust and vibrant e-commerce ecosystem that can create new business opportunities throughout Malaysia.


Speakers include Ms. Elleney Merynda Wasli, Principal Assistant Director at the newly-created Digital Economy Division (MITI) and Mr. Hew Wee Choong, Vice President, Investment & Industry Development (MDEC), Mr. Peter J. Berinus Agang, Head of Legal Metrology and Hire-Purchase Unit, Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs.


Together they will provide an update on the development and progress of the Digital Free Trade Zone, a key component of Malaysia's e-commerce infrastructure and other developments that are impacting the development of this sector. We look forward to to robust discussion on this active sector of trade that is impacting all Malaysians.


This event is part of the AMCHAM Digital Transformation Series, a platform through which our members and invited guests can share knowledge and ideas around emerging new technologies and how these impact upon business strategy and operations. Each session takes a detailed look at a specific new technology or the impact that new technologies are having upon a particular industry or function, helping businesses to explore how they can best prepare themselves to harness the opportunities presented by the digital era.

    Elleney Merynda Wasli

    Principal Assistant Director, Digital Economy Division of Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI)

    Elleney Merynda Wasli serves as a Principal Assistant Director in the newly established Digital Economy Division in January 2019. Previously she served in the Services Sector Development Division, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) from 2015. Prior to assuming her previous position, she was serving as an education counsellor at the High Commission of Malaysia to the United Kingdom in London from 2011 to 2015.

    She joined the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Service in 2006 and has served several agencies under the Prime Minister’s Department prior to joining MITI focusing on public service administrative modernisation and management planning as well as national cyber security.

    In her current position, the Digital Economy Division looks into the coordination and formulation of strategies for the development of Malaysia’s digital economy and e-commerce working together with stakeholders from both the government and private sector.

    Hew Wee Choong is the Vice President, Investment & Industry Development (IID) of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) joining in October 2016.

    As the VP, he oversees the business operations in the areas of investment from strategic planning, investment attraction, to key client management. Supporting the local companies to go global is also a key mandate that Hew oversees within division. Additionally, Hew looks into matters relating to the industry critical enablers or eco-systems to ensure the continued development of the industry.

    Hew has more than 23 years’ working experience and having graduated from La Trobe University, Australia in 1992 with Bachelor of Science (Computing & Economics) and Graduate Diploma in Economics. He has extensive experience in private sector consulting as well as B2B (business to business) Sales and Business Development. He started his investment attraction and facilitation role in another investment promotion agency as a pioneer member in 2011. He led the Investor Relations team in attracting large Fortune 500 or Forbes 2000 multi-national companies before moving into his current role in MDEC.
