He began his career in the Royal Malaysian Customs Department as Superintendent of Customs on July 29, 1984. He was first attached at the Services Tax Section on October 1984 and due to his excellent acumen for tax and tax management, has was appointed as one of the pioneer team for reviewing the implementation of Goods and Services Tax (GST) in Malaysia in 2005. He was appointed as the Director of Tax Division (2013-2015) before served as the Deputy Director General of Customs, (Customs Matters and GST) (2015-2016).
For the enforcement background, he was appointed as Director of Investigation Section (2011-2013) before being served as Deputy Director General of Customs, (Enforcement and Compliance) (2016-2017) before being appointed as the Director General of Customs.
Dato’ Sri Subromaniam’s appointment as the Director General of Customs was made based on his qualification, experience, and outstanding performance in the field of enforcement, economy, tax management and finance during his career. He has had 30 years of experience in Customs Department, mostly on Taxation and Enforcement, and also has participated in a number of International meetings especially in matters pertaining to taxation and enforcement starting from his tenure as Director of Investigation and Taxation in Headquarters.
He holds a MBA (University of New Hampshire); and a Bachelor Degree in Science (Nuclear Science) from National University of Malaysia. He also attended the Oxford Strategic Leadership Programme Course at Oxford University, Oxford, United Kingdom in 2013.
