In 2020 Malaysia will host APEC and bringing together the critical voices of regional economic integration, economic and technical cooperation, and sustainable business environment amongst a host of other areas.

What do we, on the ground, need to understand about the mission and goals of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, what is being worked on from previous hosts, Peru (2016), Viet Nam (2017), PNG (2018) and currently, Chile. What roles can business play and what are the opportunities for companies operating in Malaysia?

Please join Tan Sri Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria, Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, Monica Hardy Whaley, President, National Center for APEC (NCAPEC) and Pacific Summit Resources and Aida Safina Allias, Head of Substantive for APEC 2020 National Secretariat, Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) on Friday, 21 June at 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM (registration starts at 2:30 PM) at the AMCHAM Executive Office to learn first hand what the possibilities may be. Ticket starts from RM50 for members.

Dr. Sta Maria will take us through the role of the APEC Secretariat, the priorities of Chile and the preparations for APEC post-2020; Ms. Whaley will provide an overview of the role of business in APEC, and what we at NCAPEC do to help the American business community engage in various APEC work streams and activities, including ABAC and the CEO Summit.

Executive Director of APEC Secretariat, Singapore

Tan Sri Datuk Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria is the executive director of the APEC Secretariat based in Singapore, which serves as an advisory body, implementation arm, and custodian of institutional memory for the 21 member economies that make up the APEC forum.

Dr Sta Maria is a top-level Malaysian civil servant, trade negotiator and academic. She was the Secretary-General of the Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Investment from December 2010 to July 2016, where she oversaw the formulation of Malaysia’s international trade policies and positions and often took the lead in their implementation as chief negotiator for bilateral and regional free trade agreements such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

Dr Sta Maria played an integral role in Malaysia’s participation in multilateral forums such as APEC, where she often represented her economy during the APEC Ministers’ Responsible for Trade Meetings and the Small and Medium Enterprises Ministerial Meetings.

In the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Dr Sta Maria chaired the body that drafted the ASEAN Economic Community 2015 Blueprint as well as the ASEAN Economic Community 2025 Blueprint.

An accomplished academic and writer, Dr Sta Maria’s scholarship has been recognized through awards from the American Academy of Human Resource Development and from the University of Georgia. In 2017, she authored a book about her personal slice of Malaysian heritage and cuisine, called The Smell of Home.

Before 2010, the position of executive director of the APEC Secretariat rotated yearly among officials assigned by the incumbent host economy. Starting in 2010, the appointment was opened to applications from highly qualified professionals who will, when appointed, lead the Secretariat in fixed three-year terms with an option to renew.

Dr Sta Maria is the first woman executive director of the APEC Secretariat.

Monica Hardy Whaley is the President of the National Center for APEC and has served at the Center in various capacities since its founding in 1994. At that time, following the inaugural APEC Leaders Meeting held in Seattle, U.S. business leaders established NCAPEC based on a single compelling principle: the private sector should have a voice and a place at the table in APEC.

Prior to assuming her responsibilities at the National Center for APEC, Monica served as Interim President and Program Director of the Washington Council on International Trade (WCIT), which served as the coordinating organization for the US hosting of the 1993 APEC Meetings in Seattle, and prior to her tenure at WCIT she served in the Trade Division of the Canadian Consulate General in Seattle.

Monica holds bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and French from the University of Santa Clara and studied in Paris at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques (Sciences Pô).

She represents the United States as an Alternate Member of the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), chairs the US-APEC Business Coalition, and is a member of the Pacific Council on International Policy and U.S. Committee of Pacific Economic Cooperation (PECC). She serves the advisory board of Seattle University’s Albers School of Business-Department of Economics.
