Join AMCHAM on June 25 from 9.00am to 11.00am at the AMCHAM Executive Office as we host a thoughtful program with Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan, the former Malaysian Bar president and former chairperson of BERSIH, and Dr. Anthony Dass, Chief Economist of AmBank Malaysia to explore what is being done and what needs to be done to ensure the environment is prepared and made fertile for future growth. The session will be moderated by Caesar Loong, founding partner of Raslan Loong, Shen & Eow. The conversation promises to be thought provoking and stimulating as the guests will be discussing the issues that are foundational to this vision and promise.

    Dato' Ambiga Sreenevasan

    Senior Counsel at Sreenevasan Advocates & Solicitors

    Dato' Ambiga practices as senior counsel in a wide array of civil, commercial and corporate litigation matters. She has vast experience in commercial, intellectual property and industrial matters. Dato' Ambiga is also a well-known advocate and activist and has received several international awards for her work in this field. She was a member of the Institutional Reforms Committee, which was set up to advise the government on reforms needed to key public institutions.

    Dato' Ambiga has led several organizations in the past decade. She was president of the Bar Council (2007-2009), former chairperson and co-chairperson of Bersih 2.0 (2010 to 2013) and former president of the National Human Rights Society (Hakam) (2014 to 2018). She is currently a Commissioner of the International Commissioner of Jurists.

    Dr. Anthony Dass is the Group Chief Economist and the Head of Research at AmBank Malaysia. He has been with AmBank Group since June 2013. Dr. Dass started his career as an Economist at Bank Negara Malaysia. He worked with stock broking firms thereafter, and he is involved with various ministries and government agencies. Now, he has had 25 years of working experience!

    Dr. Dass obtained his Bachelor in Economics at the International Islamic University, Malaysia in 1987. He then went to the University of Bristol, United Kingdom in 1996 for his Master of Science in Economics & Finance. In February 2018, he received his doctorate (PhD) in Economics from University Utara Malaysia.

    Managing Partner at Raslan Loong, Shen & Eow

    Caesar Loong is a senior corporate and commercial practitioner with extensive experience in all areas of corporate and commercial law including mergers and acquisitions, investment funds, capital markets, securities, listings, public offerings, corporate banking, structured finance, power and corporate restructuring. He handles senior counsel work in corporate and commercial disputes and is on the panel of arbitrators of the Kuala Lumpur Regional Centre for Arbitration.

    He was educated at Raffles Institution, Singapore, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and Caius College, Cambridge University. He was admitted as a Barrister of the Middle Temple, London in 1983 and as an Advocate & Solicitor of the High Court of Malaya in 1985. In 1994, he was admitted as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore.

    Caesar’s legal career started in general litigation with Skrine & Co where he worked under the late James Puthucheary but moved on to become a corporate lawyer working under the late John Skrine handling major corporate restructurings, cross border investments, schemes of arrangement, privatisations and structured debt instruments. He was involved in Malaysia’s first convertible bond, Malaysia’s first privatised infrastructure project and Malaysia’s first Eurobond. He subsequently helped standardise private debt securities documentation and pioneered power purchase agreements for Malaysia’s independent power production industry. He worked extensively on projects in South Africa where Malaysian companies were gaining a foothold in the late 1990s, but returned after the Asian Financial Crisis to work on the recapitalisation of Malaysian banks and securities firms as well as Malaysia’s largest corporate debt restructuring. In 1993, he co-founded the firm of Hishammuddin Loong (subsequently renamed Lee Hishammuddin) before starting Raslan Loong, a predecessor of RLSE.

    He is a serving Board member of Mulpha International Berhad, a listed company, the National Bank of Abu Dhabi Malaysia Berhad, a fully licensed foreign bank, and the Malaysia Australia Business Council. He is a former board member of the EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC), the Kuala Lumpur Business Club and the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), Malaysia.
