A Global First for Starbucks - Hearing Impaired initiative kicks-off in Malaysia

"Our mission is to inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighbourhood at a time."

Typically countries adopt programs designed at HQs. Starbuck Malaysia bucked this norm by opening its first ever hearing impaired store in Malaysia in 2016. Washington D.C. followed suit two years later, modelled after Malaysia's initiative.

To hear about the evolution historic first, Join us Tuesday, January 22, 2019 from 2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at AMCHAM's New Executive Office to hear from Rina Siew,Corporate Social Responsibility Manager of Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company. She will share the journey and perspectives of how this American brand started its world's first store that uplifts the deaf and hearing-impaired in Malaysia, inspiring the world in the process.

The Signing Store project hires hearing impaired partners (employees) to work as frontline staff, as well as to manage day-to-day administrative tasks in the store. This helps the deaf develop self-confidence, self-esteem and self-reliance through discovery and experiences that give them pride and accomplishments allowing them to move forward to lead a functional and fulfilling life.

Aside from achieving extraordinary coffee experiences, Starbucks has made a business out of human connections, community involvement and the celebration of diversity. It is the inclusion of diverse experiences and perspectives that help create a culture of empowerment at Starbucks. The company has set itself out to be a different kind of company.

There is no charge to attend this program, we would like to encourage staff of member companies to register for this program and be inspired. Please kindly register early so you are not disappointed.
