On 16 January, AMCHAM, along with US-ABC hosted the 2024 welcome reception to welcome our new Ambassador-Designate, H.E. Edgard D. Kagan at EQ Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

Our first event of the year saw an amazing turnout of over 90 members. The new ambassador’s introduction and participation in the Q&A session added value to the event, especially with his focus on Malaysia and Southeast Asia’s potential.

Malaysia Minister of Economy, Rafizi Ramli officially launched the “AI for the People” program at Dewan Besar, UPM Serdang, Selangor, marking a significant step toward bridging the digital literacy gap in Malaysia. The International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL) hosted a thought-provoking VOX ISKL event titled 'Creating a Better World: From Empathy to Impact,' marking the ninth installment in the VOX ISKL series, a platform specially created to inspire, inform, and ignite conversations both within the school itself and the wider community about topics that matter.

Christopher & Lee Ong has released and update of the various trade law related developments in the region. 2023 has been a year of moving onward from the pandemic, though fraught with gloomy growth predictions. In spite of this, trade law has continued to evolve, with legislations, regulations, and policies continuously upgrading to better facilitate the movement of goods across borders. This issue looks into some of the key developments across Southeast Asia, on topics such as anti-dumping and safeguard measures, developments relating to export/import, free trade agreements, as well as sanctions.

Global trade patterns are reconfiguring. More shifts are likely and businesses need to be aware of the potential trade-offs of different paths ahead.

Trade reconfiguration has been making headlines. In 2023, Mexico became the United States’ largest goods trade partner. Vietnam’s trade with China and the United States has been surging. European economies’ energy imports shifted dramatically away from Russia, while imports of some products from China, such as electric vehicles, boomed.
