Newly appointed Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has officially begun his duties as the state's 19th MB. This comes after Barisan Nasional emerged as the winner of the state election on March 12, clinching 40 out of 56 seats.


In conjunction with these developments, AMCHAM will be hosting a political outlook briefing post-Johor State election with Ibrahim Suffian, Program Director at Merdeka Center for Opinion Research, and Tricia Yeoh, CEO at Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (IDEAS).


The in-depth discussion will touch on the implications of this election and what we could expect in the near future for Malaysia, politically, socially, and economically.

    Co-Founder & Programs Director of Merdeka Center for Opinion Research

    Ibrahim Suffian is a co-founder and programs director of Merdeka Center for Opinion Research, a leading public opinion polling and political surveys organization in Malaysia. Through Merdeka Center, Ibrahim has been involved in organizing surveys in Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Brunei, Singapore and Myanmar.

    Ibrahim received education from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University and obtained an MBA from the Eli Broad College of Business at Michigan State University. Ibrahim was a World Fellow at Yale University in 2011.

    CEO of IDEAS

    Tricia Yeoh is CEO of IDEAS (Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs), an independent public policy think tank in Malaysia, where she has previously held positions of Chief Operating Officer (2013-2017) and Fellow (2017-2020) and Visiting Research Fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute Singapore.

    She is also a PhD candidate at the School of Politics, History and International Relations at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus, examining federal-state relations and opposition subnational durability within dominant party authoritarian regimes. Specifically, her thesis covers the Pakatan coalition’s control over Selangor and Penang from 2008 to 2018 under the single-party dominant federal regime of Barisan Nasional.

    She was formerly Research Officer to the Selangor Menteri Besar at the Selangor State Government, and has previously served as Director of the ASLI Centre for Public Policy Studies. She is a regular columnist at the Sun, the Penang Monthly magazine, and wrote for Selangor Times before it had to wrap up. She writes on national socio-economic policy and has delivered various presentations at national and international platforms.

    She is qualified in Econometrics and Marketing from Monash University, and holds a MSc. in Research Methods in Psychology from the University of Warwick. She sits on the IDEAS Berhad Board (for charitable projects) and is a Director of the Institute of Youth Research (under the Ministry of Youth and Sports). She was formerly on the Monash University Business School Advisory Board and Centre for Public Policy Studies’ Advisory Panel.

    She is editor of “The Spirit of Merdeka” (jointly edited with Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad), the book “The Road to Reform: Pakatan Rakyat in Selangor” and its Malay version, “Liku-liku Reformasi: Pakatan Rakyat di Selangor” and author of the book, “States of Reform: Governing Selangor and Penang”. Her documentary, “The Rights of the Dead”, which tells the story of the Teoh Beng Hock who died in 2009 under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s watch, won the Justin Louis Award at the Freedom Film Fest 2012.

    She is recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal, conferred by the Selangor Sultan (Pingat Jasa Kebaktian, PJK), and the Monash University Malaysia Distinguished Alumni Award 2017.
