MITI: Employees Immunisation Program Kicks-Start With The Manufacturing Sector

The Immunisation program for the private sector or PIKAS has been agreed upon between the Ministry of Science and Technology and Ministry of Health to be started in Phase 4 of the country’s vaccination schedule.

For the manufacturing sector the first to kick start, will be coordinated by MITI which will then engage with both public and private entities to vaccinate employee’s in the sector. Other Ministries will also be tasked to coordinate between employers to actively mobilise vaccination process under this program. The committee representing both the Ministries has reminded employers to practise decorum when advising their workers to vaccinate.

According to MITI, the program was initiated after calls from various industry association, business chambers of commerce and small medium enterprises call on the government to expedite immunisation for workers. Many businesses have been struggling with the full lockdown an those in the essential sector have been finding it difficult to operate under minimum head count. On concerns of cost to vaccinate, Dato Seri Azmin Ali, Minister of International and Trade Industries said the vaccines will be free under the program, they can be administered by private medical practitioners and even at factory locations.

Implementation of PIKAS will start on 16 June with on-site vaccination at designated factory lots and industrial areas. Companies involved in critical manufacturing sub-sectors including electrical and electronics, food processing, iron and steel, medical, PPE, oil and gas, rubber products including medical gloves will be prioritised. Others include the construction and maintenance of critical infrastructure like healthcare facilities and utilities.

MITI has assured that it will engage with industry association on rolling out the program at broader scale, so far it has received applications from 500 companies with a total of 106, 591 ready to be immunised.
