Tan Sri Dr Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria re-appointment as Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Secretariat for a third term, beginning January 1, 2022, was announced after the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting, which was hosted by New Zealand.

APEC 2021 Senior Chairman Vangelis Vitalis says, “Sta Maria’s leadership was crucial in leading the APEC Secretariat through the most challenging global crisis, with support for member institutions, organizers, and economies in navigating the region’s work and priorities remained strong as before.”

Since 2019, Sta Maria has been the Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, advancing the implementation of APEC members’ economic priorities during the period when Chile, Malaysia, and New Zealand were the organisers.

“Her administration has placed emphasis on enhancing APEC’s diverse membership to liberalize and facilitate trade including investment in addition to realizing greater regional economic integration,” he says.

The APEC Secretariat serves as a coordinating body and technical advisor for the 21 APEC member economies in order to advance joint initiatives.

Meanwhile, Sta Maria claims that cooperation among member economies was crucial in overcoming crises like COVID-19.

“This pandemic demonstrates the importance of greater collaboration between the region and the international community. It has taught us that none of us is capable of making decisions on our own.

“As we continue to advance multilateral cooperation for a more inclusive and sustainable future,” she says, “the secretariat’s role in strengthening the team of diplomats, experts, and professionals is crucial.”
