Herbalife Nutrition Promoting a Sustainable Future with Recycling Programme

Kuala Lumpur, June 22, 2022 – In conjunction with World Environment Day, Herbalife Nutrition is making positive strides in its sustainability efforts with the Company’s first canister recycling programme in Malaysia, alongside the launch of its Asia Pacific ‘Simply Recycle’ initiative. This is part of Herbalife Nutrition’s regional initiative in its Asia Pacific markets, in line with its global goal of reaching 50 million positive impacts that nourish people and the planet by 2030.

As global temperatures rise and climate-related events occur more frequently than before, there is a growing need on consumers to make more sustainable choices. It is encouraging to see that according to Herbalife Nutrition’s Asia Pacific Nutrition Sustainability Survey 2022, 79% of Malaysian consumers surveyed  believe that recyclable packaging materials are important while making nutrition-related decisions. In addition, 93% of Malaysian respondents believe a company’s recycling program will encourage them to support its environmental sustainability initiatives.

To expand its commitment to recycling and support the rising demand for accessible recycling facilities in the country, Herbalife Nutrition is rolling out a pilot project in Kuala Lumpur and plans to gradually introduce the program to the rest of Malaysia. The Company aims to do this while teaming up with Recycle for Life (RFL), an initiative by Cenviro Sdn Bhd, a Khazanah Nasional Berhad investee company under the sustainable pillar, to educate and promote recycling initiative to the community. RFL will be the official strategic partner for this programme. Starting from June 21, 2022, RFL will conduct monthly collection of empty Herbalife Nutrition canisters from Herbalife Nutrition headquarters in Malaysia at Plaza See Hoy Chan.

“Reflecting our commitment to nourishing a thriving planet, we strive to contributing positive environmental impacts in areas such as plant-based proteins and ingredients, forest restoration and circular economy,” said Mr. Steven Chin, Senior Director/General Manager, Herbalife Nutrition Malaysia and Singapore.  “Through our partnership with RFL and the Simply Recycle initiative, we want to further strengthen efforts to reduce our environmental footprint. What’s more, 100% of the cash rewards collected from this programme will be donated to Herbalife Nutrition Foundation, enabling us to reach out to more of those in need in Malaysia.”

Dr. Johari Jalil, Managing Director, Cenviro Sdn Bhd, commented, “Protecting the environment by reducing the amount of waste in landfills is a key priority for us. One of the objectives of RFL is to support the Government’s initiative to encourage separation at source and to achieve the country’s recycling rate of 40% by 2025. Since our inception, our mission has been to achieve a circular economy and we do this in various ways, including working with key stakeholders to realise our goal. We are pleased to share that we have collected more than three million recycled items since 2017 and we are excited to continue this momentum by partnering with Herbalife Nutrition.”

Herbalife Nutrition has adopted a multi-layered strategy aimed at actively reducing the environmental impact of its packaging through key goals, including reducing plastic bag use from distribution centres worldwide, utilising 25% post-consumer resin (PCR) in its Formula 1 canisters globally over the next two years, and reducing packaging where possible while ensuring product quality and safety.
