KUALA LUMPUR (Feb 24): Microsoft was the top cloud vendor globally last year with a cloud revenue for the year amounting to US$59.5 billion.

According to research data analysed and published by online trading portal Comprar Acciones yesterday, in the first quarter of 2020 (1Q2020), the tech giant generated US$13.3 billion, rising to US$14.3 billion in 2Q2020, US$15.2 billion in 3Q2020 and US$16.7 billion in 4Q2020.

The portal said Microsoft’s annual figure was 31% higher than that of second-placed Amazon Web Services (AWS).

It said AWS raked in a total of US$45.4 billion, with considerably lower quarterly increments compared to Microsoft.

Comprar Acciones said Amazon’s revenue totalled US$10.22 billion in 1Q2020, growing to US$10.81 billion in 2Q2020, US$11.6 billion in 3Q2020 and US$12.74 billion in 4Q2020.

It said the 4Q2020 figure marked an increase of 28% year-over-year (y-o-y) from US$9.95 billion but was lower than analysts’ estimate of US$12.83 billion.

Google Cloud moved up to the third position, taking the place of Salesforce, with US$13 billion for the year.

Cumulatively, AWS and Google Cloud raked in US$58.4 billion during the year, lower than Microsoft’s total.

Top five cloud service providers accounted for 58% market share in 4Q2020

Comprar Acciones said 4Q2020 saw particularly impressive results from the industry as a whole, with global cloud spending rising to US$39.9 billion according to Singapore-headquartered technology market analyst firm Canalys.

Compared to 4Q2019, that marked a US$10 billion or 32% y-o-y increase.

It also translated to a 10% increase quarter-over-quarter and was the largest quarterly growth on record in dollar terms.

During that period, Microsoft Azure, AWS and Google Cloud accounted for a 58% share of the industry’s revenue.
