Join us for ESG Awareness Session on April 5 with Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift, CEO of Bursa Malaysia Bhd, and Miranda Carr, Executive Director, ESG Research, Asia of MSCI (APAC), who represent both national and global perspectives of ESG, including Malaysia's progress and current standing on sustainability.

    Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift

    Chief Executive Officer at Bursa Malaysia

    Datuk Muhamad Umar Swift is the Chief Executive Officer of Bursa Malaysia Berhad. He is also the director of all subsidiary companies within Bursa Malaysia Group, and serves as a Chairman of Bursa Malaysia Derivatives and Clearing.

    Datuk Umar has more than 25 years of experience in the areas of banking and financial services. He was also the CEO of Gas Malaysia and Head of Enterprise Financial Services Group of Maybank. Prior to helming the Exchange, he was the Chief Executive Officer / Group Managing Director of MAA Group Berhad, where he also assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer of Malaysian Assurance Alliance Berhad (now known as Zurich Insurance Malaysia Berhad).

    Datuk Umar sits on the Board of the Securities Industry Development Corporation and is an appointed member of ‘Anugerah Kecemerlangan Industri’. He is also an Ex-Officio member of the Financial Reporting Foundation and a Board member of the Capital Market Development Fund, both appointed by the Ministry of Finance.

    Datuk Umar holds a Bachelor of Economics degree from Monash University, Australia, and is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, a Fellow of CPA Australia, a
    Chartered Tax Adviser of The Tax Institute of Australia, and a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia (FINSIA) in Australia. He is also a Chartered Accountant with the Malaysian Institute of Accountants and a Registered Financial Planner.

    Miranda Carr

    Executive Director, ESG Research, Asia of MSCI (APAC)

    Miranda Carr joined MSCI in January 2021 as Head of APAC Thematic ESG Research to focus on the key issues and developments in ESG in the main Asian markets, including China. She is also developing ESG integration frameworks for key APAC clients.

    Prior to joining MSCI, Miranda was Senior ESG Analyst at Haitong International, one of China’s largest securities companies, where she worked from 2015-20 and launched their ‘ESG in Asia’ research product, which developed corporate governance and ESG investment frameworks for the Chinese and Asian markets. Before that, she spent 8 years analysing Chinese government policy and investment strategy as Head of Research for an independent research company, NSBO, in London/Beijing.

    In 2003, she obtained an MSc from Bayes Business School (formerly CASS Business School), where she focused on Socially Responsible Investment.
