Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, FedEx Express (“FedEx”) continues to work together with international organizations such as Direct Relief and Heart to Heart International to donate shipping services and provide support with relief efforts, helping to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 worldwide, while adhering to local conditions and guidelines. In fact, the collaboration has also seen the transportation of over 1,500 shipments of humanitarian aid weighing more than 175 U.S. tons globally since the end of January.

AMCHAM is in the process of developing and sourcing topics for webinars sessions for members. With the implementation of the Conditional MCO beginning 4th May 2020, most businesses have resumed operations with some increased risks which in turn results in heightened obligations. There is also a concern that the MCO could become an “on/off” event until an effective vaccine is developed. Our panel will discuss the employment obligations and concerns in the new normal.

While Covid-19 has accelerated the debate around such relocation, it is not a new phenomenon in itself. In recent years rising production costs, coupled with increased tariffs implemented as part of the US-China trade war, have seen businesses steadily move their factories and plants out of China in favour of more competitive markets.

Long after developed markets have Covid-19 relatively under control, the virus will remain a threat in emerging markets, where uneven governance, weak health systems, dense urban slums, and high rates of poverty multiply the challenges of fighting the pandemic. In a few countries there are already early signs of political instability and civil unrest; in others the political effects will become clearer as the virus and government responses unfold over the months ahead.
