The AMCHAM Executive Office Team has been trying our best to support all our members in their varied needs through thick and thin since COVID-19 became our new reality. While there is never a right or good time, especially in our most unpredictable of circumstances, we are giving the entire team a week to ‘decompress’.

This evening we were delighted to have with us H.E. Brian McFeeters, U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia to brief our members on the latest happenings in the U.S with regards to trade, COVID-19 vaccinations, and other areas. Members had the opportunity to seek clarifications from the Ambassador directly as well as his team, Dennis Simmons, Juha Salin and Timothy Harrison.

An updated set of SOPs have been released for areas undergoing the National Recovery Plan Phases 1, 2 and 3. Notable updates include the areas involved, the general health protocols, permitted activities, businesses and services allowed to open, and the essential services allowed to operate.

The number of second-dose COVID-19 vaccinations in Penang is set to rise next week, as the state aims to get 40% of its population vaccinated. Beginning next week, more people will be receiving their second dose, and Penang will achieve a vaccinated population rate of 40% and transition to Phase Three of the National Recovery Plan (PPN).

The total applications for approval to enter and leave Malaysia for Malaysians and foreigners received by the Immigration Department through the MyTravelpass system this year rose compared to last year. The department received 111,722 applications compared to 85,715 applications in the same period last year.

In recent weeks, news outlets had reported high-profile legal suits filed against a leading accounting firm in respect of the statutory audits carried out by the said firm. The legal suits were filed pursuant to alleged negligence, breach of contractual duty and breach of statutory duties. Talent Corp says the joint publication is a timely assessment of Flexible Work Arrangements (FWAs) that result in a healthy and engaged workforce, despite disruptions caused by the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP), which is listed among the top 20 ports in the world, is the only port that saw a jump in its ranking. The encouraging performance was due to the success of PTP, which recorded a growth rate of 8.5% last year.

Hospital Kuala Lumpur is currently in urgent need of hospital equipments due to overwhelming number of COVID-19 patients. AMCHAM is seeking support from any of our member companies who is able to contribute.

Hospital Ampang has close to 150 COVID patients now in, and for the past few weeks the hospital has been expanding the wards in terms of manpower, equipment, and proper isolation spaces.

Both patients and clinicians need equipments urgently to be able to do their work.
